The Bio21Institute was opened in 2005 and is equipped with state of the art platform technologies to underpin the research in the institute.
- A Bruker 800 MHz NMR is one of many NMR machines available for us to use. Other instruments located in the Bio21 NMR cave are 2 x Varian 500 and a Varian 400 MHz. Also located in the NMR cave are 400 and 600 MHz solid state instuments.

- Mass Spectroscopy is well represented with many machines within the building high and low res.
- The electron microscopy sweet has been equiped with 4 new instruments
- FEI Nova dual beam, focussed ion beam system: Equipped with EDAX for sample microanalysis, Pt-deposition system and micromanipulator. Suitable for device cross-sectioning, TEM sample preparation and nanofabrication.
- FEI Quanta scanning electron microscope: Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) fitted with a Peltier cold stage operating from -25 to + 40C. A Gatan cryo stage (Liquid Nitrogen) has recently been installed. Designed for high resolution imaging of the surface morphology of biological and materials science preparations.
- FEI Tecnai F30 Transmission electron microscope: Equipped with a cold stage which allows imaging of quick frozen samples under cryo-electron microscopy conditions. The main application of this microscope is the structural investigation of macromolecular protein complexes.
- FEI Tecnai F20 Transmission electron microscope: High-resolution TEM suitable for materials science applications. Fitted with HAADF (STEM) detector and EDAX system.
